Master Peter Scholz: Insights into the journey of a Siu Lam Wing Chun fighter

Peter Scholz began his in-depth journey into the world of Siu Lam Wing Chun in 1997 together with a group of former school friends. What began as a passion evolved into a life’s mission: to teach and spread authentic Siu Lam Wing Chun. The style, which has its roots in the teachings of Shaolin Abbot Zi Sin, is known for its efficiency and directness—qualities that Peter Scholz particularly values.

In 2007, he began teaching Siu Lam Wing Chun in Berlin. A defining moment came in 2008 when he exchanged ideas with an MMA fighter during a joint workshop. This experience led him to reflect on his martial arts practice at the time. Scholz recognized gaps in his knowledge and a lack of experience in applying what he knew. Instead of switching styles, he decided to accept this challenge and delve deeper into it. This led him to establish close contact in 2009 with some of the world’s most skilled and respected Siu Lam Wing Chun instructors.

In the years that followed, he gained insight into Siu Lam Wing Chun from the Chu Chun Man lineage and studied under Sifu Apolo Chiu. He then shifted his focus to the Tang family lineage, as he was particularly inspired by Tang Yik’s long staff style, with its power and dynamic lightness of foot. Between 2009 and 2012, he studied via email, video exchanges, and corrections from Sifu Michael Tang Chun Pak. In 2013, Scholz spent three months in Hong Kong for intensive training and subsequently traveled there several times a year for a few weeks to expand his knowledge.

In 2010, he founded the Berlin School of Siu Lam Wing Chun together with his wife, Bettina Pela-Scholz. Bettina, whom he met in 2003 while training with Sifu Jörg Weidner, is now a Qigong instructor and martial arts educator who helps make the school an impressive place.

In 2016, Peter Scholz was able to establish contact with one of Sigung Tang Yik’s three longest-serving students, Sifu Peter Wong Wing Keung. Beginning in 2018, he began studying intensively under him. The fundamentals and precise execution of the techniques are particularly important in Siu Lam Wing Chun, as the hand and weapon forms can be applied one-to-one in real combat. This makes our lineage highly effective in practical application today and attractive to Sanda fighters and those in the MMA field.

Today, Peter Scholz passes this knowledge on to his dedicated and ambitious students. Maximilian Kraft, Oliver Stenzel, and Peter Scholz work together to help these young people excel in competitions. He is delighted by the many children and teenagers who are already mastering this wonderful martial art at a young age, and he is eager to see how they will bring Siu Lam Wing Chun to new heights.
