Long pole in Siu Lam Wing Chun:
The supreme discipline of the Tang family
The long pole, also known as the Luk Dim Bun Gwan or 6.5-point long pole, is a prominent element of Siu Lam Wing Chun and a specialty of the Tang family. This traditional training tool is characterized by its exceptional length and heavy wood, which makes it an indispensable part of advanced martial arts practice. The Luk Dim Bun long pole is an integral part of all Wing Chun families. It has even been incorporated into the 70.5 long pole form of Hung Gar Kung Fu. The Luk Dim Bun is the specialty of the Tang family and masters of this line are famous for their light-footed and nimble footwork and their tremendous power.
The virtuosity, strength and speed with which the members of the Tang family wield the long pole have earned them the title “Kings of the Long Pole”. These skills have been passed down through generations and have made members of the Tang family such as Tang Yik and his father Tang Syun legendary figures in the world of Kung Fu. Peter Scholz, dubbed the “German King of the Long Pole” by Sifu Michael Tang, learned these skills by 2016, then mastered them and is now passing them on.
Long pole training in Siu Lam Wing Chun is not only a method to enhance physical skills, but also a profound cultural heritage that integrates the principles of armed and unarmed combat. Students learn the basic movements and the complete long pole form of Tang Yik, including the long pole wooden dummy form. These comprehensive training methods increase effectiveness, applicability and directness in all aspects of Kung Fu, from self-defense to combat sports and mastery of Kung Fu.
